Dr. Dorin, Prosthodontist, Answers the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns, Veneers, and Full-Mouth Rehabilitation

Today, patients are no longer looking solely for functional solutions—they also want aesthetic results that are seamless. The field of dental prosthetics has evolved remarkably, now offering a wide range of treatments—from minor corrections with veneers to complex restorations with crowns or fixed dentures.

Naturally, this diversity raises important questions: When should I choose a veneer, and when is a crown necessary? What exactly does a full-mouth rehabilitation involve?
With an impressive portfolio of more than 600 full-mouth rehabilitations (such as All-on-4® or All-on-6® systems) and over 200 aesthetic restorations (veneers and dental crowns), Dr. Dorin, prosthodontist at Dentus Dentino Dental Center, answers the questions patients most often ask.

What is the difference between dental crowns and dental veneers?

A dental crown completely covers the tooth, restoring its function and structural integrity. It is recommended when a significant portion of the tooth structure is compromised. Its primary role is to protect and preserve the long-term health of the tooth.

A dental veneer, on the other hand, only covers the visible (facial) surface of the tooth and serves a predominantly aesthetic purpose. It corrects the tooth’s shape, color, and alignment, providing a harmonious and natural appearance.

Which type of crown should I choose: zirconia or ceramic?

The choice between zirconia and ceramic crowns depends on the tooth’s location and the patient’s goals. Zirconia offers superior strength and is ideal for molars, while ceramic provides exceptional aesthetics in the anterior area due to its translucency and natural appearance.

Will I feel pain during the procedure?

In most cases, prosthetic treatments are completely painless because we use local anesthesia whenever necessary. Patients may feel slight pressure or temporary discomfort during tooth preparation, but should not feel actual pain.

Any post-procedure sensitivity is usually mild, short-lived, and easily managed by following the doctor’s recommendations.

How long does a dental crown last? What about a veneer?

Longevity depends on the material used, oral hygiene, and risk factors such as bruxism or aggressive chewing. However, statistics show the following:

  • Dental crowns: Typically last between 10 to 15 years, and modern zirconia or high-performance ceramics can significantly extend this lifespan.
  • Dental veneers: With proper care and no trauma, veneers last an average of 10 to 12 years, maintaining their color and shine.

How can I maintain my prosthetic work (crowns and veneers) long-term?

The longevity of any prosthetic work rests on two pillars:

  • Rigorous Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, use dental floss, interdental brushes, and an oral irrigator. Don’t forget the margin (where the restoration meets the gum line). Also, avoid very hard foods that could damage the restoration.
  • Periodic Check-Ups: Regular visits to the dentist (every 6 months) and professional cleanings are essential. This allows us to identify any issues with the gums or the restoration’s structure early.

What is a fixed dental prosthesis?

A fixed dental prosthesis is a comprehensive, non-removable prosthetic restoration. Its purpose is to replace multiple missing teeth or all the teeth on one dental arch. This restoration is permanently anchored, either to remaining natural teeth or, in many cases, to dental implants. It fully restores both chewing function and aesthetic appearance.

Can I eat normally after receiving a fixed implant-supported prosthesis?

Absolutely. One of the major advantages of fixed implant restorations is that they restore 90 to 100% of the natural biting force.

However, a short adaptation period is normal. Start with softer foods and gradually introduce firmer textures, while avoiding extremely hard foods that could damage the restoration.

Will a fixed prosthesis look like natural teeth?

Our primary goal as prosthodontists is perfect integration.

Using advanced digital technology and modern materials, we recreate the shape, color, and translucency of natural teeth. A successful restoration is one that no one can distinguish from a healthy, natural tooth.
