Dental implant or bridge
What is better?

8 out of 10 Moldovans have lost at least 1 tooth
Only 39% of them brush their teeth twice a day

Healthy teeth ensure a bright smile and have a significant impact on overall health. Missing one or more teeth is more than an aesthetic problem.

Did you know that? After 1 year after losing teeth, about 30% of the bone recedes due to lack of stimuli, and if you don’t replace the missing teeth – they recede even more. Your teeth, like your body, need healthy bones. A strong jawbone secures the teeth and maintains them. Just as exercise helps maintain muscle tone, chewing food stimulates bone density in the jaw. But when you have a missing tooth, this can trigger a bone loss in the jaw because the empty space doesn’t have another tooth to make contact with to stimulate bone. This gap will eventually lead to damage to the jawbone and weakening of the surrounding teeth.

A missing tooth can have a domino effect on your dental health. Recent studies show that one missing tooth can increase the risk of losing more teeth by more than 30%.

Consequences of missing teeth:

  1. Teeth migrate (move, to cover the gap)
  2. The gums are receding
  3. Gastric conditions (difficulties in mastication)
  4. Facial aesthetics suffer (premature aging, lips are pulled inward, face shape changes)
  5. The jawbone resorbs
  6. The gums and bones are no longer stimulated
  7. Decreases the level of confidence

Dental implant – the most innovative and long-lasting option for replacing missing teeth. This procedure involves the insertion of a titanium screw into the jawbone, on which the dental crown will later be fixed. Here’s an example – our patient Inga always hid her smile and thought that her teeth had no chance of being restored. One day she came to Dentus•Dentino. Her life changed 180 degrees after talking with the implantologist. The patient received support and understood that the doctor, an expert in implantology, high-performance devices, and modern dentistry – can restore her smile.

Some patients replaced 1, 2, or 4 missing teeth, and others – all teeth. The Fixed Teeth technique on 6 implants restored the smile, aesthetics, and masticatory function and increased the level of self-confidence. I recommend that you have a consultation and do not neglect your dental health. By the way, the Dentus Dentino team holds an Implant Open Day once a year – the event during which you benefit from a free X-ray, a consultation with the implantologist and a treatment plan. Here’s how it was this year, click here to see.

Advantages Disadvantages
Dental implant
  • long term solution
  • prevent bone loss in the jaw
  • biocompatible with the organism
  • it perfectly imitates the structure of the tooth
  • primary stability
  • protect neighboring teeth
  • the ability to osseointegrate
  • maintains and stimulates the jaw bone
  • it looks and feels like a natural tooth, thanks to the dental crown
  • resistance to mastication
  • the possibility of having All-On-6 in one day
  •  require surgery
  •  are more expensive than bridges
Dental bridge
  • non-invasive method
  • quick treatment
  • immediate comfort
  • aesthetic aspect
  • restoring the masticatory function
  • improves your speech problems
  • can last you 10 years or longer
  • loss of healthy tooth enamel
  • bone loss continues to occur
  • not as lasting as implants
  • although they last for several years, they still need to be replaced
  • leads over time to bone resorption
  • requires the grinding of 2 adjacent teeth
  • increased pressure on adjacent teeth
  • possible sensitivity to hot, cold

So, as you can see, the dental implant is quite different from the dental bridge, having several benefits. If in the case of the dental bridge, the neighboring teeth are ground and sometimes devitalized (the nerve is removed), then the dental implant does not touch the neighboring teeth, but protects them. Imagine you have a missing tooth and the neighboring teeth are healthy and strong. Now, to put the dental bridge, the doctor grinds down those healthy teeth. The unpleasant situation, isn’t it?

Doctor’s recommendation

Dental implants are superior to any other existing prosthetic work for tooth loss, and the experience and thorough training of our medical team guarantees smile rehabilitation. Dental implants are a popular choice for people who are missing one or more teeth because they provide a long-term solution and do not require support from adjacent teeth, as bridges do. With proper care, regular dental office visits, and a healthy lifestyle – an implant can last a lifetime. Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages. So which is better? The answer depends on many factors, including the patient’s individual case. During the consultation, I can give you an exact answer.

Frequent questions

We have collected the most frequently asked questions of patients. Read carefully and find out the answers to the top 5 questions.

  1. Does dental implant surgery hurt?

Answer: Dental implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain or discomfort.

  1. Can I be allergic to dental implants?

Answer: The dental implant is biocompatible with the organism, being made of titanium. This means that the implant “makes friends” with living tissues. Before the implantation operation, the patient goes through a set of analyzes and tests, to make sure that everything is in order.

  1. If I get a dental bridge, will the adjacent teeth have their nerve removed?

Answer: If the teeth are destroyed or their position is tilted, then it will devitalize (remove the nerve) so as not to cause pain, sensitivity or discomfort. But, if the teeth are healthy and positioned correctly – the nerve will be preserved.

 4. Can the implants be placed immediately after the tooth has been extracted?

Answer: An implant can be placed immediately after extraction if you have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density. If you have lost your tooth due to gum infection, the tissue must heal for 3-4 months in the mandible and 4-6 months in the maxilla, before inserting the dental implant.

  1. Is there an age limit to get a dental implant?

Answer: It is important that the patient is 18+ years old. We have patients of different ages, 60, 70, 80 and even 90 years old, who have turned to dental implants to restore their teeth. Therefore, dental implants represent the optimal solution for replacing lost teeth.
