6.5 bad habits for your teeth

Once at the barber shop I was explaining to the stylist what kind of haircut I wanted, he replied with a surprising remark: “Let’s try, hair is not a tooth, it will grow!”. This made me pay even more attention to the hygiene and health of my teeth.
There are a number of bad habits that destroy teeth. Find out what they are and stop practicing them:

Improper tooth brushing

Do not brush your teeth in the horizontal position. Brush vertically, at 45 degrees, from gum to tooth. Perform circular, delicate and thorough movements. Do not brush with pressure, as you can inflame the gums and destroy tooth enamel.

Here are the factors that prevent high-quality brushing: the toothbrush has hard bristles, it is too big, you do not clean your tongue, you do not change the brush once every 3 months, you use a toothpaste that is not suitable for your situation, you do not brush your teeth enough (recommended 3- 5 min.), etc.

Eating acidic foods in large quantities

Acidic foods lead to the erosion of tooth enamel, subsequently to the appearance of cavities. The structure of the tooth becomes porous, pathogenic microorganisms that destroy the dentin easily penetrate it.

To maintain health and neutralize the action of acids, you don’t have to completely give up your favorite foods: just rinse your mouth with water after eating. Drink juices and fruit drinks with a straw. To neutralize the acidic pH, serve for example pickled vegetables with carbohydrates, meat or fish.

Crispy snacks

The habit of eating nuts, seeds, crackers and other solid foods leads to damage to the front teeth, the appearance of cracks in the teeth. The modern rhythm of life makes us snack on the run, but all this is harmful and dangerous for the teeth. Dry solid food can damage gums and enamel. Microcracks on the surface of the teeth, which are well hidden and not visible, are an ideal condition for the rapid development of caries.

Bite hard objects

Biting and opening hard objects with the teeth can lead to the destruction of the enamel, the formation of cracks, the development of malocclusion, the chipping of the tooth and sometimes its breakage.

This danger awaits those who open bottles with their teeth, crack nuts, seeds, bite pens and pencils or tear tags from clothes.

The use of toothpicks

Toothpicks are present everywhere: at home, in cafes and restaurants, hostels, etc. Dentists do not recommend their use. These can inflame the gums and leave food particles that will accumulate between the teeth. Later, caries will appear, which cannot be seen, affecting two teeth simultaneously.

There are gentler ways to remove food debris stuck in the interdental space: dental floss, oral irrigator, interdental brushes.

Excessive intake of sweets and carbohydrates

Dear sweets lovers, the consumption of sweets and carbohydrates is a danger to the health of the teeth, contributing to the formation of bacterial plaque and the appearance of dental caries. It increases the risk of gingivitis and other dental conditions. So, limit the consumption of sweets and carbohydrates, practice proper oral hygiene, make regular visits to the dentist and professional oral hygiene (dental scaling with ultrasound, removal of bacterial plaque, AirFlow, professional brushing).

Teeth whitening at home

The main disadvantage of teeth whitening at home is low efficiency and side effects: enamel destruction, increased tooth sensitivity, mucosal irritation, gum burns and allergic reactions.

Teeth whitening at home can be dangerous. Due to the use of sodium bicarbonate or hydrogen peroxide, the tooth enamel surface is considerably destroyed. It’s an irreversible process, so after destruction, the upper layer of enamel cannot be restored.

We recommend that you consult your dentist for this procedure. Professional teeth whitening in the office is safe, it gives immediate results. It is performed under the supervision of the dentist. In addition, the in-office whitening procedure is customized according to the needs and sensitivity of each patient.

The dentist can adjust the concentration of the whitening agent and the duration of the treatment to achieve optimal results and minimize discomfort.
